Overview

Calling all adventure racing soloists, and teams or lead navigators who know their navigation skills are keeping them from getting to the next level.

If you can read a topographical map and land features, but are not making the best route choices or moving at the speeds you would like, you might wonder how the top teams are doing it. This intensive navigation coaching is for YOU!

Ronny Angell will show a small group of three how he navigates and races during the foot orienteering sections.  This class will incorporate day and mostly night navigation. We will be going to an area that Ronny has not seen before. This will allow for a true teaching experience as the group watches and learn how Ronny attacks different points and race strategies in an unfamiliar setting, like a race! Come prepared as if you were doing a 24 hour Odyssey Adventure Race or another adventure race, with all the mandatory gear, food and water. Your pack should be loaded. This is optional but it will give you an opportunity to fine-tune your systems. This weight will best simulate a race weight pack, true race pace and a race mindset.

Ronny will show how to plot points and route assess as quickly as possible. Once the points are plotted, we will move as fast as we can with Ronny leading the first hour (longer if need be) to show the skills and teamwork to be a successful adventure racing team. Team members will alternate the roles of main navigator, second navigator, pace and time, and food and water (Ronny will handle this role once the group is navigating). We will pace count to each point, use altimeter, establish attack points, catch features and backstops, use land features, and learn how to communicate seamlessly.

Knowledge from 12 years of adventure racing, mostly as the lead navigator, and tips learned by talking and seeing the best navigators in the sport of adventure racing will be at your fingertips ready to be accessed. Come armed with questions, an open mind, and the want and drive to compete at the best of your ability.

Be prepared to tow, be towed, carry extra weight, give up your pack, and whatever is need to move the team forward. Ronny will watch and teach as you navigate through the woods working as the lead navigator and the other roles associated with being a successful team. He will make sure you understand your role and the tips to making it as easy as possible. You never know when you are bonking, so all you can do is listen for your watch to go off and tell the team when to drink and eat.  Each role is very important to the success of the team.

Bring a GPS if you have one. Ronny will show you how to use it to practice your land navigation.

The class will be held outside of Charlottesville, Virginia. All details will be given when you register for the event.

It is highly recommended that you have attended an advanced navigation class, raced some adventure races or rogaines, or feel comfortable navigating. If you are not in this comfort zone and want to learn more, attend the Odyssey Land Navigation Clinic and /or Odyssey Advanced Navigation Clinic.

Overview

The Odyssey Advanced Land Navigation Clinic will be an information-packed day of compass, topographical map study and orienteering in Roanoke. This will be a fun day consisting of minimum classroom study with more emphasis on day and night field work. You will learn from knowledgeable instructors with years of adventure racing, hiking and backcountry experience. You will learn techniques that are proven to work and more importantly how to work together with a team to navigate successfully.

There will be 3 hours of classroom instruction and 7-9 hours of field work finding plotted points using the skills you have learned. We will cover between 8-10 miles, on foot at a slow and learning pace, mostly off trail through thick brush, open forest and steep hillsides.

The Odyssey Advanced Navigation Clinic will explain:

  • Techniques to use to know where you are on your map at all times
  • What to do if you have lost contact with your map
  • Teach how to transition from one map to another and keep all the information flowing
  • How to use terrain features, compass, and altimeter to figure out your location
  • Advanced route selection techniques
  • When to use pace count versus time verses terrain features or all at the same time
  • Teach how to use land features to your advantage during the day and night
  • Nighttime navigation techniques
  • How and when to use intentional offset, triangulation
  • Navigation on the bike and "must have" tools and how to use them
  • Navigation on the water
Here are what past students are saying:
I highly recommend Ronny Angell’s Advanced Land Navigation Clinic.  I am a weekend warrior adventure racer, doing mostly 12-24 hours races as a soloist.  I took Ronny’s basic Land Navigation Clinic several years ago.  I had somewhat plateaued with my navigation skills and wanted to get to the next level.  Ronny certainly did not disappoint.  He has a rare combination of skills: successful adventure racer, teacher, and patience.  Not everyone that can do, can teach.  Ronny’s the exception.  After a brief classroom session assessing my strengths and weaknesses, we spent headed out to the Virginia mountains to work on my skills.  He constantly challenged me, asking me where exactly we were on the map, where we were headed, and what was the next land feature I was looking for.  He allowed me enough “rope” to get off course, to then let me figure out how to re-orient myself.  I had never truly appreciated the finer details of map skills until this outing.  He also shared numerous training and racing tips.  I can’t wait for my next race!

Navigation is a MUST for adventure racers who want to excel at the sport. It doesn't matter how fit or strong you are if you are moving in the wrong direction!  If you do not know how to use a map and compass, trust us, you will not stay on course.

You are most likely spending a great deal of time, energy and commitment in your training just to get to the starting line. Make sure you have also committed to upgrading your navigation game so all your hard work can be seen.

The Odyssey Land Navigation Clinic is an information-packed day of compass, topographical map study and orienteering in Roanoke. We'll spend the first part of the day (5-6 hours) with classroom instruction. This is a great time to get to know one another, ask questions, and learn the foundational principles of top level navigation. The next 6 hours we'll get out into the beautiful woods and spend 6-8 miles on foot at a slow learning pace, mostly off trail through thick brush, open forest and steep hillsides.

You will learn what the best adventure racers know and how to work together with a team to navigate successfully.

“I just completed the Odyssey Land Navigation clinic and it was an awesome experience.  Ronny not only teaches you how to navigate but also gives you a million adventure race tips from real life experiences.  I am a land navigation instructor in the military and still took away quite a few tips that I will be giving to my future students.  I highly recommend this course to anyone interested in this sport or navigation.” Nicanor

Although this clinic is excellent for all outdoor enthusiasts - mountain bikers, hikers, backpackers, and general adventurers who want the confidence and skill to explore their limits in nature - it is uniquely designed for the adventure racer.

If you are an Adventure Racer, this is the next step in taking your race results to the next level!

navfieldwork 000“Just wanted to let you know that we did an 8 hour race this weekend and after attending your navigation clinic, the navigation section of the course was much easier. After orienting map north actually found every checkpoint without using compass again but read the terrain and went to every point just using the map. Your clinic helped me so much even I was surprised and my teammates too! Once again thanks for your clinic as my navigation skills have improved tremendously!!!!!”  Keith

"The Land Nav Clinic this past weekend was a treasure trove of tips and tricks which will be invaluable during the One Day AR this summer.  Having spent some time in the infantry I felt I had a grasp on the technical side of navigation.  The “insider’s look” you gave us on AR style navigating combined with your constant presence and subtle guidance in the field has opened my eyes to the artistic side.  Contour lines, re-entries, and turning off your lights to better find your way in the dark all have new meanings which will not soon be forgotten.  In short, the cost of the clinic is well worth the knowledge and experience gained. I cannot say it enough…  Thanks for a job done well and sincerely!”  Jason
